Isaiah Younglove Johnston
(Notes) ISAIAH YOUNGLOVE JOHNSTON (William4, William3, William2, William1) was born February 22, 1810 in Delaware County, New York and died November 6, 1889 in Romulus, Seneca County, New York (Willard Asylum). He married CORNELIA T. BRUCE April 25, 1835.
Notes for ISAIAH YOUNGLOVE JOHNSTON:
  • Occupation: Farmer.
  • 1850 census: Candor, Tioga Co., NY - Isah Johnson.
  • 1860 census: Sidney, Delaware Co., NY.
    Notation: "Pauper and Insane Hereditary".
  • 1870 census: Corning, Steuben Co., NY, living with son, William - Isaiah Johnson.
  • 1875 census: Caton, Steuben Co., NY, living with son Abner - Isah Johnson.
  • 1880 census: Willard Asylum, Romulus, Seneca Co., NY - Isiah Y. Johnson.
    • "The Inmates of Willard (1870 - 1900) - 1880 Census Willard Inmates Men" - Isiah Y. Johnson, white male, aged 69 years, married, farmer, insane, born in New York, housed in Cottage #1.

    • "The Inmates of Willard (1870 - 1900) - 1880 Census Willard Inmates Men 3D (Defective, Dependent and Delinquent)" - Isiah Y. Johnson; Residence: Corning, Steuben; Pay-Patient: No; Form of Disease: Periodic Mania; duration of present attack: 18 months.
  • Cause of Death: The State of New York reports "Disability of old age", but his medical records from Willard Asylum states cause as injuries received in a beating inflicted by another patient.
  • Burial: November 9, 1889, Barnard Cemetery, Corning, Steuben Co., NY - J. Y. Johnston.

Many Johnston researchers omit Isaiah's line presumably because of the insanity label. They somehow seem to forget the other word of that label, hereditary. One cannot erase the bad things in life simply by "sweeping them under the rug".
There have been descendants of Isaiah and Cornelia who have also been labeled as "insane" only to be discovered in an autopsy that they possessed brain tumors that caused their behavior as well as their deaths. This is not meant as an excuse for Isaiah's condition, merely as a possibility.
